I began a morning ritual visioning + drawing practice on the summer solstice in 2026. I start with either cyanotype and black gessoed watercolor paper and use gel pen to create fanciful illustrations that emerge from my freshly awakened mind. These tap into my dreams and inner lives, combining human, plant and animal forms to explore emotions, interpersonal dynamics, secret personal myths and often silliness. The fluid line of the gel pen itself offers me the same satisfying line that etching into a plate that my printmaking roots yearn for, but forces me to yes-and through one single creation.

I use divination to select my palette by asking my eyeless left hand to choose five or six colors. Surrendering to this limitation lets me explore colors I wouldn’t consciously choose. Sometimes I’m surprised by neon rainbows or hideous palettes that end up delighting me in the end. The cyanotypes offer existing nooks of textures and suggestions and the black gesso offers a total void to climb into. This practice invites me to problem-solve and wander through the image until it it’s complete.
