On Black
In early 2020, I covered a stack of old prints destined for the burn pile in black gesso. A long time chromaphobe, this paper-reincarnation invited me to work in colored pencil on this void of a surface. The black gesso makes for an exciting inverted emergence, and in 2021 I’ve also returned to greyscale working in white water-soluble graphite on this inviting surface. This starting point allows me to revisit printmakerly marks using these softer materials and their less-controlled effects.
