My work is a swirling devotion to process and surrender.

Since 2019, cyanotype has taught me subversive techniques via states of play, acceptance and transformation. This alternative photographic process uses light-sensitive chemicals which are applied to a surface like paper or fabric, exposed to UV light, and developed with water to create brilliant blue and white images. Processes like bleaching, toning and wet-cyanotype make for more color possibilities using the same chemistry.

My cyanotypes are born on the bathroom or basement floor, wrestled with in the bathtub, and engage mundane or grotesque objects and scrappy techniques. I’m overtaken by the disparity between the process and the result: complex images are created from simple, direct, and often silly methods. Process photos tiptoe throughout this exhibition to illuminate this integral and uncanny part of how these images came to be.

My art often reveals my emotions to me before I’m even aware of them. The shapes and figures that show up allow me to explore the pendulums of human experience: connection / disconnection - intimacy / surface - control / letting go. 

There’s a sense of grief suspended within the layers of each piece. The paper holds the memory of each new layer, dodging destruction while creating space for possibility. Cyanotype allows me to accept the present. I may grieve the absence of the vivid cerulean that was once there, or a certain texture that disappeared — but what is present never could have arrived without them. The former layers and deeper hues remain in a form we may no longer perceive, yet they’re hidden within. In contrast, some are created in a single exposure. One quick sun-worship, as if by a flick of the wrist. 

The unpredictability and generative inertia of this process continues to allow my work (and heart) to grow.
